AGATHA CHRISTIE
WHY DIDN’T THEY ASK EVANS?
Bobby
Jones was playing golf with doctor Thomas when he heard someone yelled. But his
friend, Dr. Thomas heard nothing. Bobby and Dr. Thomas approached the next tee
that was in the cliffs on the precipice. The tee that they
have circled the abyss
the depths of this very terrible. Bobby hit his ball again
and that ball lost in the edge of brink. Bobby walked slowly over the path to
take his ball.
Suddenly,
Bobby floored and called his friend. About 40 feet below there was
something black that visible like clothes. Then both of them descended the
ravine. Finally, they arrived to that thing. And the fact, it was a man aged
about 40 years old and he still breath although swoon.
Bobby pulled a handkerchief from that man’s pocket and draped him to his face.
There was nothing that can do. Then he saw something that pulled from that man
pocket. That thing was a picture. Bobby glanced at it.
The photo was a picture a
beautiful woman. That face was kind of interest-face and hard to forget. Bobby slowly inclusion of the photo again into the
man's pocket. Subsequently bobby remembred something.
Bobby had been promised with his father - a clergyman- to playing the organ in the
service at six o’clock in this evening. And he forgot to leave
a message to the doctor
Thomas to be delivered to his father.
Subsequently, he heard a sound from the above. That
was not dr. Thomas. That was a man who he did not know. bobby could not see it clearly because it
was getting dark. That man, Mr. Bassington-ffrench, then
replaced Bobby to
hover corpse after
Bobby explain the
cause.
Bobby
Jones met the woman named Frankie, his old friend, on the train. Frankie later
asked about the incident -which certainly makes Bobby
surprised from where this friend knows it-
she read in the paper. Bobby finally told the story.
That man that was dead
named Alex Pritchard. Bobby was asked the explain by police. Bobby met with
Mrs. Leo Cayman that he guessed as a woman in the photo. That woman face was
very different with the photo. Mrs. Leo Cayman was a kin of Alex Pritchard.
Mr. and Mrs. Cayman came
to see Bobby in his house to
inquire at the last moment of Alex Pritchard. Bobby
still can not believe what he saw.
The woman face that he had met was very different in the
photo.
In the next day Bobby received a letter
from Badger Beadon –his old friend- to
ask him for work on next Monday. On Wednesday in that week Bobby received a
letter again. That letter from Henriquez & Dallo Company in Buenos Aires
and offered a job with a thousand pound salary a year. Though, Bobby declined
the offering and chose to work with Badger together.
Bobby leaned himself in the thick fern plains. Bobby finally ate his lunch with
gusto after he
fell asleep. With satisfied he opened the drinking
bottle. It felt very bitter but refreshing.
Then he felt sleepy again. He felt weak. He slept-with very deep.
Lady Frances Derwent
–Frankie- visited Bobby that was apparently poisoned with
eight grains of morphine.
Frankie argued that the case was related to the
abyss that Bobby
cases of morphine poisoning. Bobby reluctantly rejected that possibility.
After read the
newspaper, then Bobby knew that the photograph in
the newspaper was a different
picture with a picture
he had ever seen. Bobby and Frankie started to search
about that woman in the photo. They also started search the meaning from “why
didn’t they ask Evans?”
Frankie asked about Bassington-ffrench to
her father, Lord Marchington. In tomorrow morning Frankie went to
Wheeler&Owen office –a real estate and house rent agent- to find out about
Bassington-ffrench with said that the man was her friend who was searching a
house. Then Mr. Owen, the owner real estate agent gave Roger
Bassington-ffrench’s address that lived in Merroway Court, Starverley.
Then Frankie’s next visiting was police
office. Frankie asked about the numbers of photo. Of course just there was one
photo in Alex Pritchard’s pocket. Frankie also asked Mr. Jones’ case. From
there Frankie got the information about a car dark blue Talbot with number
GG8282. She swore after found there were 482 Evans in Marchbolt. She made
another plan.
A week later Frankie planned will make a
fake accident with helped by Bobby and George Arbuthnot who will disguise as a
doctor. Doctor George Arbuthnot recommended Frankie to be treated at
Bassington-ffrench’s residence. Mrs. Bassington-ffrench
accepted her gladly.During at that house, Frankie discovered about people who
lived in. frankie felt Mrs. Bassington-ffrench was a kind woman and was not at
all suspicious. Frankie and Sylvia became bosom.
In there Frankie
knew that Henry Bassington-ffrench – Sylvia’s husband- was a morpine drug addict. Of
course she didn’t scented Henry. And
Roger Bassington-ffrench was not in Wales when Bobby was poisoned. That night, when
the dinner, Frankie felt everyone in that house seemed react naturally. The only thing that successfully acquired just a name –Alan
Carstairs. Alan Carstairs was an adventurer who has traveled the world. He had an adventure with John
Savage who thought
she had cancer and committed
suicide.
Frankie’s mind drifted to the last words of
victims. Evans! Who was Evans? Frankie
presumed that a man who felt in the abyss was Alan Carstairs. At that night, Dr.
Nicholson and his wife was invited for dinner. Frankie saw them out of the car
dark blue Talbot.
Dr. Nicholson was a tall
man with sharp sight behind his sunglasses and was a genious person. His wife
was a slim woman and had a beautiful face. Dr. Nicholson asked Frankie about
the accident. Frankie felt afraid. She could control the situation, though. The
Frankie wrote a letter to Bobby to ask him come there.
Bobby got a letter from his father that
said there was someone who asked his address in London. The man was tall,
slightly stooped, and used round glasses. He hopped can meet Bobby someday.
Then Bobby went to Merroway Court to meet Frankie with disguised as a personal
driver named Edward Hawkins that was sent by Frankie’s father.
Bobby –with named Edward Hawkins- started
pried Grange. Dr. Nicholson’ work place. In that time, he saw a woman he had
ever seen in photo. Bobby told this to Frankie. Bobby disguised as a law firm
to find out about relationship between Alan Carstairs and
Bassington-ffrench.the woman in the photo named Moira who also Dr. Nicholson’s
wife.moira met Bobby. Moira told that her husband wanted to kill her. Dr.
Nicholson liked Mrs. Bassington-ffrench. Bobby, Moira, and Frankie met. Bobby
and Frankie told the truth, their purpose cane to Merroway Court without
suspicious.
Roger confessed that he had exchanged the
photo with other people’s photo with the reason didn’t want to make Moira
difficult. Roger said certainly that a man who dead wasn’t Alan Carstairs.
Roger declined to take Henry to Grange that had previously assured by Frankie.
Then the erruption was audible from Henry’s room. In there Henry dead by firing
a gun at his head. That time Dr. Nicholson came to take his keys.
Frankie called Bobby soon. They thought
that Henry was not suicide. But was killed. They argued someone who killed
Henry was Dr. Nicholson. Then Frankie went to Grange to meet Moira. But Dr.
Nicholson said that Moira had left to London since morning.
Frankie searched Cayman’s step and Bobby
searched Moira. Frankie started search them over house agents who had visited
by Cayman. After asked several information, she got nothing. Frankie read a
newspaper and she found a name –John Savage-. Suddenly an idea appeared. Maybe
his will related with his suspicious death. Frankie quickly went to place where
the will can be seen by pay one shilling.
Frankie came to Mr. Spragge office to ask
about Alan Carstairs with claimed he was her friend. Alan Carstairs came to Mr.
Spragge office to ask about Savage’s will. He didn’t believe that Mr. Savage
dead by suicide. In Mr. Savage’s will, he left a legacy of seven hundred
thousand free taxes to Mrs. Templeton.
Bobby began looking for Moira by visiting
Grange secretly at midnight. He crawled over to the side Grange’s windows. He
could see Dr. Nicholson was writing something through the crack of window. Then
he circled the house and climbed a tree. However the tree branch was broken. It
made Dr. Nicholson out of the house. He quickly hid. And then from the darkness
Bobby felt something was hit to his back of the neck.Bobby collapsed.
Frankie sent a telegram to Bobby with name
George Parker. But ther was no answer. Finally Frankie came to Ambledever, the
place where Bobby stayed. But she didn’t find Bobby. Frankie became worried.
Frankie told this to Roger. Then Frankie got a letter from Bobby that told her
to come sonn to Chipping Somerton by train.
Frankie went to Tudor Cottage where Bobby
waited. Frankie gave signals to her arrival with whistled like an owl. However
all was dark and hushed. At that moment she smelled chloroform. Someone held
her from behind with choloroform. She collapsed.
When she was concious, she realized her
hands and feet bound. In there she found Bobby with same condition. Bobby tried
to untied Frankie. At that time someone came. Bobby aloofed Frankie sooner.
Dr. Nicholson came . he was held Bobby and
Frankie. Moira still alive. Then he left again. Suddenly Bobby remembered
something. The man who came wasn’t Nicholson. The man’s ear was different with
Nicholson’s. he was a man disguised as Nicholson. They finally knew the
mastermind behind all of this was Roger Bassington-ffrench. Because Roger was a
person who was clever disguise.
In next minutes, the sound of broken glass
was heard from the tiles above. That was Badger. Then the fake Nicholson came
to them. Badger hid under the bed and Bobby’s boot was placed on glass
splinters. Fake Nicholson strengthened their bond and left. Badger came out
from there and cut the bond. They waited fake Nicholson come.
Before Roger come, Badger told that he
came to Starverley for owe money from Bobby. Then Badger saw Frankie’s car in
front of a pub in empty. Badger got into the car. Then a driver got into the
car and he wasn’t Bobby but someone that he had ever known. That car brought
them to Tudor Cottage.
Subsequently, they heard footstep neared.
They were preparing to subdue fake Nicholson. Then in fact fake Nicholson was
Roger Basington-ffrench. Roger that had hit Bobby and forged letters to
Frankie. And Nicholson had nothing to do with this situation. Roger chuckled
when they asked about Evans. Then they came out from the room. They checked every
room inside house. In fourth room they saw Moira was lying on the bed. They
called police. Then police came.
Then they went back to top, where Roger
was tied. They were surprised to find that the room was empty. Roger had run
out. In café Bobby showed a photo to Frankie that he had gotten under the
telephone last night. Frankie asked that photo to a waitress. That person in
photo was Mr. Templeton. Mr. and Mrs. Templeton had a kitchener named Rose
Chudleigh and a gardener , Albert Mere.
They divided tasks. Frankie searched the
information over law firm that handled John Savage’s will. And Bobby searched
Rose Chudleigh and Albert Mere. They met again when lunch time. The they went
to meet Rose Chudleigh that now named Mrs. Pratt. Rose Chudleigh said that
there was a housemaid named Gladys who often served Mr. Savage. Booby and
Frankie wondered why they summoned the kitchener and gardener to witness wills
while the maid was in the house.
Why didn’t they ask housemaid? At that
moment they were conscious that the family name of housemaid was Evans. And
they finally knew the purpose from Alan’s question . Because Evans would know
soon that the truth was not Mr. Savage who signed the will. They began to
looking for Evans.
They started from post office. Frankie bought
two pieces of two shilling stamps. With a faint, Frankie asked about Gladys
Evans to an employee there. Frankie subsequently asked Evans’ address that
current named Roberts with reason wanted to give back the raincoat she borrowed
from Evans.
They got Evans’ address. They were
dumbfounded red the address. Mrs. Roberts, Pensions Pastor, Marchbolt. An
address that also was home to Bobby himself. They quickly went back to
Marchbolt with rented a small plane. The plane landed on Derwent castle garden.
Five minutes later they soon drove to Marchbolt with Frankie’s father car.
After they arrived in front of Pensions
pastor, they met Moira. Moira already knew who Evans was. Three of them went to
a cafeand offered coffee. Moira felt Bassington-ffrench followed her. The Bobby
and Frankie went out to see him. They went back in.
Bobby lifted his cup and suddenly Frankie
lost her balance so that she spilled Bobby’s coffee. Frankie took a vinegar
bottle that had was empty and put the coffee into the bottle. She then turned
away to Moira and said that the game was end. Frankie saw Moira put something
into their cups when they was in outside. Moira became angry and pulled out a
gun to shoot it. But the shot was missed because Bobby’hand hit the gun. Moira
got busted by police.
Several weeks later Frankie received a
letter from South America. The letter was sent by Roger Bassington-ffrench. He
revealed that he wanted to have Merroway and have much money. For the bussiness
Moira used a name Mrs Templeton. Moira met Savage and tried to approach him.
Then Cayman acted as a callous husband. Savage was lured to come to Tudor
Cottage and was made to stay more than once. Moira pretended to go other
country. But the truth she came back to Starverley, Grange. Roger gave morphine
to Henry to relieved his rheumatic pain. Henry became morphine addict.
Carstairs saw Moira photo on top of piano who he knew as a woman that was sent
by Savage. Carstairs succeeded search Evans’ step. He knew her current name and
went to Marchbolt. Roger followed him. Roger hustled Carstairs when the fog
ascended. Moira put the morphine into Bobby’s beer bottle. Roger killed Henry
by shot a gun when the plane sound across. Then he wrote fake letter then came
out and locked tha room. Moira also untied Roger.
And then all became amicable and calm.
Booby and Frankie was engaged. Badger’s bussiness was advanced and Bobby held a
coffee plantation in Kenya.
